This week we’ve been shoring up the design docs and clarifying the vision going forward. As the game concept and visuals start to materialize, we wanted to take a beat and make sure we’re moving in the right direction. I’ve also been continuing to work on an animation showing off slime crawl, UI, and our wall gates. Brian is still working on camera controls.

Voting is in on the slime fighters. The ‘Road-Runner’ won with 7 votes! I’ll get to modeling him next! The Spook came in second with 4 votes. We may still use him too.

Also, Brian was interviewed by Colin Campbell after he wrote his post about the game That Dragon: Cancer.
Check out the interview at Polygon.

That’s all for this week! Thanks for following our progress as always!

This week we’ve been working on an assortment of small tasks. I’ve been consolidating the slime art into a single sheet to speed up performance. I also finished animating the wall gate this week. I didn’t quite have time to put together a video. Look for something this weekend!

Over the last couple of weeks I got to coordinated with our new sound guy, Lawrence Steele who has made a couple of awesome sounds in our first round of audio. I’ll work them into upcoming videos.

Brian has been working on refined camera controls, polishing up unit path-finding, and putting in the auto-place mechanic for the road system.

Voting on the slime fighter concepts is still open for a few more days. Just go to youtube and post a comment to vote!

Thanks for keeping up with our progress!

This week I did some concepts for the robot slime fighters. These are the foot soldiers in your slime-fighting force. The first line of defense against your gooey foe.

I decided to record the process in a time-lapse painting. It gives me a chance to ramble on. It also reveals the extremely scattered process I go through when creating a concept.

We’re hoping you guys will like one of these guys, and decide it needs to be transformed from 2D to 3D. If none of these is deemed worthy of a third D, I’ll diligently return to the drawing board! Assuming one is chosen I’ll hopefully have a 3D version of it ready to show next week.

-Weston

P.S. Please don’t vote for the guy in the feather boa, he’s already assured a spot in the game.

Hello! This week we’re showing off these 2nd tier walls. Build these walls around your city to protect it from evil, and slime. The big orange door can be opened and closed manually to keep out the slime. But it also keeps in the people, which will be detrimental to your structures outside the wall.

This is one of the elements that was built in the 2D, isometric version of the game. It didn’t exactly translate into 3D, but pretty close.

Over the weekend I decided to revamp the existing characters in your slime-fighting team. I wanted to add a little expression and life. I also wanted to flesh out the third member.

So, on the left is your engineering genius; Brighton. He’ll introduce you to your new toys as they’re unlocked. He’ll also find the most bizarre, but effective, way to solve any of your tech-related problems.

On the right is Dr. Neem. His job is to discover everything he can about the mysterious invading slime that’s been ravaging your world. As new, disgusting pustules form in the slime, he’ll explain their function and hopefully a way to destroy them.

Finally, in the center, is Major Fairchild. She’s the resistance commander/project overseer. She’ll relay relevant information and commands from HQ. She’ll also be the one keeping you at your best.

This is half the planned team. The other three will be extremely important, but you won’t be talking in depth with them, they’re secondary and in-game support. On that list is the ground commander of your slime fighters. He’ll take orders directly from you. Also your automated defense coordinator (robot pilot), and of course, ‘The Chief’ who’s running the whole operation.

Thanks to everyone who’s been following the project on Facebook. Every new comment or ‘like’ is a fire under our asses to get this thing done faster!

Back next week with new in-game gadgets for your slime fighting needs!

Brian here, Weston has been doing a great job with the art concept updates every week, but it’s hard to keep up with that pace so he asked me to fill in this week. These are my thoughts on my trip down to the Game Devloper’s Conference this year.

I went down to San Francisco to attend GDC this year, or really rather to socialize with people who attended GDC. In the process I met some amazing indie developers and had a deep experience with a game demo that took me completely by surprise and knocked me on my ass.

My takeaway from the conference is largely philosophical which is less expected than it should be. When I talk to other seasoned developers, it usually doesn’t go too deep in a technical direction because most technical issues in terms of small games have either been solved (done) before, or aren’t super difficult to figure out. This is a sign of a maturing artform - we don’t need to grind our own lenses anymore like early photographers did. We can focus on the artform itself which still has a ton of interesting things to figure out.

Many of the discussions I had were relating to how games are just now becoming a lasting part of mainstream culture and not just a throwback to 80’s arcade/console nostalgia. The reason in my eyes is that we are finally seeing a critical mass of the population that is “game literate”. Games are not a passive experience, they require interaction and in the case of core games, quite a bit of hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness and skills like mouselook which can take time to develop as a player. This creates a barrier that has excluded many people from playing games, much less understanding them. That barrier is quickly being eroded by the smartphone. Smartphones have probably done more to generate “game literacy” than any other device ever created. This is because of the thousands of games that are available on the phones and also the necessarily simple nature and interface of those games.

Speaking of game literacy, Roger Ebert passed away the other day. I have mixed feelings about Roger. Partly because of his stout resistance to recognize games as an artform, but also because I am now seeing all kinds of people I respect talking about how passionate, open-minded, and knowledgeable he was. He clearly was an intelligent man, and saw beauty where even other critics did not. So why could he not see that games are clearly an artform? I believe it’s because he was not game literate. He could not get past the clunky barriers that can obstruct the deeper nature of the artform. All he saw was the blurry, scratched lens and grainy black and white image that games are today. Granted, we don’t have our Ansel Adams yet, but we will soon. It’s too bad that he died before he could realize how wrong he was.

Another (big, important!) sign that games are maturing is that the content is becoming more about basic human struggles in day to day life rather than larger-than-life power fantasies. Many indie game developers are taking this challenge head on and I have to give a big tip of the hat to them because they are taking risks and pushing the artform itself in ways that mainstream games are not even attempting to do.

Which brings me to getting knocked off my ass. I had the good fortune of meeting Ryan Green and Josh Larson at a party and they are working on a game called That Dragon, Cancer. The game is a very personal expression of Ryan’s struggle with his son’s terminal cancer. Knowing his situation and having met him really brought home the gravity of the situation when I started playing the demo. Within about 2 minutes I was crying and could not continue. Reading Ryan’s poetry and hearing his voice in-game really affected me and I was overcome with sadness.

It’s taken me a while to process this experience. I was not expecting to react as I did, and I was embarrassed that I had broke down in a room full of other developers who I have a tremendous respect for. I was unfortunately more concerned with not appearing to be “that emotional guy” than I was with connecting with what I experienced and connecting with Ryan, who was right next to me and comforting me. I can only imagine what he has gone through and what he and his family are going through with his son.

I wasn’t sure what I would expect going down to GDC. I’ve been down a few times before, but never before just to hang out with other indie developers. I’m very glad that I did, I met some great people who have inspired me as much in-person as they have with their games. I admire the courage of many indies like Ryan who expressing something deep and personal in a way that others can relate to, and in the greatest artform ever created.

-Brian

Over the last two weeks I’ve been chipping away at our first ‘large’ building, the ‘Tower of Cash’. All the buildings available to you in Slime City will come in two footprint sizes. The ’small’ buildings will fit on a 8×8 meter square. The large ones are 4 times that size at 16×16 meters.

The final design is still quite fluid. But the tower of cash, obviously, is the behemoth of cash production. It will probably be quite expensive to build, but well worth the investment.

This is the first building to have people on it! All the citizens of Slime City will be 2D, hand drawn to match the camera angle. This gives us the freedom to have all kinds of crazy characters, doing all kinds of crazy things, quite cheaply.

I’ve been working on a huge new building this week, but I didn’t quite finish it. So this week we’re showing off our first vehicle, the bus! Also, this tiny, 1 tree park.

The buses will help clear up traffic on the streets. They will randomly replace 5-10% of your cars, allowing traffic, and building efficiency to increase. Parks will effect adjacent building with higher efficiency and they will require minimal resources and be cheap to build.

Next week look for our first big 4×4 buildings, and people!!

We’re showing off roads this week. I’ll refrain from making any Back To The Future references, eh? As you can see we’ve done our best to make these the most bike-friendly and people-friendly roads possible. Although I’m pretty sure the bike lanes will get axed, and the bikes and cars will just have to share.

We’re still debating the game mechanics behind the roads. On the base level, your buildings will simply not produce (turn on) if they’re not adjacent to a road. Buildings may also gain additional output if roads run on multiple sides. Of course slime will be able to travel over all road surfaces.

We’re also discussing basing the output of each building off how long it takes their dedicated vehicles to circumnavigate the whole road system. So the larger your city gets, the slower your building payouts will be. This is still open, we’ll have to test that mechanism.
